WORKING CLASS FEMINIST

WORKING CLASS FEMINIST

“I never had enough money or enough privilege to be white. I’m white trash and society better learn how to recognise the difference” — White Trash Anthem, Blood for Blood.

Slut, chav, feckless, work shy, white trash, common, dregs, scum, criminal. These are some of the many labels they give us in a society that demonises the poor at every turn and blames us for our own economic oppression. Yet, with mainstream left-wing politics dominated by middle class voices who largely ignore class,  which then feeds into mainstream feminist discourse, the very real, lived experience of both working class and underclass women is ignored entirely. Working Class Feminist seeks to expand the conversation. I come to this as a working class woman who is entirely disenfranchised by current left-wing politics, as well as someone who still very much aligns with the solid economic policies and principles inherent in democratic socialism. It is time we returned to talking about economic privilege as the only true privilege in this world.  It is time we recognised there is a class war raging and everything else is a distraction to keep us in-fighting, while the rich get richer, and the poor get poorer.
